SAVING
FUEL AND GOING GREEN
Warmer weather across British Columbia is all the incentive
many of us need to load up the RV and take to the open
road in search of fun and adventure. In spite of spiraling
fuel prices, RV adventuring still offers many benefits,
especially to traveling families.
Follow these simple guidelines to save you substantially
at the pump and help the environment.
- The difference between 85 and 110 Km/hr can mean as
much as 8-10 Km/liter on many vehicles.
- A well tuned engine with clean filters will use less
fuel and produce fewer pollutants.
- Stick to the roads your RV is designed to handle. Straighter
and less hills can mean less work for your engine.
- Plan shorter trips, you would be amazed what you can
see closer to home.
- Stay in one place longer, take a bicycle along, or
do a little hiking. You’ll feel better and save
fuel.
- Come prepared but don’t pack everything you own.
Traveling with less gear means less weight your engine
will have to pull.
- Unless you are “boon docking” carry only
enough fresh water to safely get you to your next destination.
- Dump you holding tanks as often as possible. 80 gallons
of holding tank water plus another 50 gallons in of fresh
water can equal over 1000 lbs!! That would be the payload
capacity of most ½ ton trucks on the road today.
- Consider solar power rather than running a generator
to keep coach batteries charged. The cost of a solar
charging system is less than a replacement generator
and without the emissions.
With the fuel injected, computer controlled vehicles of
today, cruise control is not always the best way to save
on gas/diesel. When pulling over hills, it is more efficient
for you to be using your petal than the cruise control,(which
will continue to add throttle to maintain speed, no matter
the conditions) a human touch on the petal will often save
you fuel consumption in these situations. Tread lightly,
save money! |
